Helping Kids Strive for Excellence
Helping our kids learn to do excellent work can be a challenge at times.
They are more concerned with playing with toys, outside and with their friends than making sure their work, whether school or chores, is done completely. Their number one goal is to get out of the job or get the job finished regardless of the quality of job completed. We need to help our kids understand the importance of excellence and quality work. Excellence is defined as the quality of being outstanding. Excellence stands out. It will stand out not only today in their work, but more importantly with their work as a young adult and well into their career. There is a difference between excellence and perfection. Perfection is defined as the condition, state, or quality of being free from all flaws or defects. At times perfection is unattainable and almost paralyzing. Steve Jobs said, “be a yard stick of quality. Some people aren’t use to an environment where excellence is expected.” We should help our kids understand the importance of doing good work. We do this by creating an environment where excellence is expected and modeled. The burden falls on parents to create this environment. It can be an inconvenience to go and inspect the work done by your kids. But remember, what gets inspected gets done. We need to be consistent with our expectations and follow through. With your consistency, inspection, and modeling children will grasp a standard of what excellence looks like. Remember that the are kids and will at times push on the standard. If the standard is always moving your kids will always push. If the standard stays consistent then you can smile and say this is just how we do it here in our home. They will thank you one day!
