Helping  your  kids  show  respect

When looking for employment first impressions make a big difference.  A first impression is made by the way a person dresses, grooms their hair, and by their first spoken words.    

A young adult looking for employment that speaks with respect in their volume and choice of words usually will extend the conversation and gain a little more time to show themselves worthy of the job opportunity. 

In contrast, a young adult that is careless with their words and appearance will have the door shut fairly quickly.

One of the best definitions concerning respect is showing others they are important by what you say and do.  

This definition pushes a person to action.  There is more than knowing a person deserves respect.  Think about how respect is shown in the military.  Grown men and women will stop, wait, and hold their salute to an officer of higher rank until they completely pass.

Helping kids learn the value of respect can be very challenging.  It is also important to help kids show respect to their parents early in their life.   One of the best ways to help kids show respect is to give respect.  The way you treat other adults teaches them how people should be valued.  

When you notice respect being shown it is a good time to point that out to your kids.  Key note here though, make sure that you don’t use that to condemn or belittle your child by communicating that they should be more like this other person.

Helping kids learn to respect other kids or siblings can seem like an uphill battle.  They are constantly doing to each other what has been done to them.  The cycle goes on and on.  We need to reinforce to children they are responsible for their actions.

Talk about what showing respect looks like with:

• classmates
  
•  siblings
  
• teacher 
• parent
• someone at the grocery store
• coach

For an entire week, whenever you see your child showing respect give them a wink.  Let them know what you are doing.  You can even have them wink at you when they catch you showing respect.  Remember positive reinforcement takes a little more work, but will increase your chances of success!
