BACK TO SCHOOL JITTERS“School Days, School Days, Good Old Golden Rule Days
Reading and Writing and ‘Rithmetic…” School has changed so much since we were there. Simple, is not good description. Today kids have legitimate reasons to feel anxiety as the new school year approaches-teacher personalities, bullies, difficulty subject matter, friends in the classroom, and the list goes on. It is normal for kids to feel anxiety as summer counts down to fall. Your child may feel moody, irritability may set in, and eating and sleeping patterns may change. These are all real feelings. Validate them. Create a worry-free environment by talking about school. What is the best thing you are looking forward to? What is the worst? Let your child know that their concerns are valid. Talk through these as you let them know that this is perfectly normal. But it is important that you talk with kids and not down to them. They pick up on our emotions and intent quickly. Tried and true hints for a successful first week: *Tuck a stuffed animal or favorite blanket to remain in the backpack of a younger child as a reminder that Mommy and Daddy have confidence their day will go well. * A special new necklace for your daughter. *Encouraging notes tucked into lunch boxes and notebooks.
